PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Kasey Abbott
Three great things will be happening at our meeting next Wednesday evening. We have Student Night, a visit from our ASHRAE Director and Regional Chair (DRC), and a program from a speaker who is highly respected in our industry.
Let’s give our student members, and our Regional DRC, a warm welcome on Wednesday October 3 at the Westward Ho. The social hour will begin at 5:15 PM, dinner will be at 6:15 PM and the meeting/program will start at 6:45 PM.
Activities related to Student Night actually start earlier. From 2-5 PM we have our technical seminar that we are using to raise money for scholarships. Please see my article on the seminar for further details.
Dave Olson, Region IX DRC, will be at the meeting and will be updating us on what new things ASHRAE has planned.
We have an excellent program. Dr. Charles Remund is one of the leading experts on ground source heat pumps. He also happens to be from SDSU and is a member of our chapter.
Please RSVP to Jill Beatty for the October 3 dinner meeting by Monday @ 9:00 AM by clicking on the yes or no button at the top of this email. If you have additional questions you may email jill.beatty@ddccontrol.com, or call her at 575-3739.

We are excited to have Chuck Raymond speaking at this month’s ASHRAE meeting. Chuck will be speaking on Ground Source Heat Pumps. Chuck will also be hosting a technical seminar from 2-5pm for those interested in earning PDH credits. See the President’s Message for specifics. Chuck’s bio is listed below.
Dr. Remund has over 20 years of experience installing and designing geothermal systems. He has been a certified instructor for IGHSPA since 1994. He has been on the Mechanical Engineering faculty at South Dakota State University since 1988, where he teaches thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, design of thermal systems and applied laboratory courses. Dr. Remund has been principle investigator on many research projects associated with ground source heat pumps, specifically addressing heat transfer characteristics of grouting materials, soil and rock. He worked with regional electric utilities and the Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium through the Northern Geothermal Support Center at SDSU, through which hundreds have been trained in various aspects of ground source heat pump design and installation. Training and outreach activities continue in a limited capacity at SDSU, while Dr. Remund has become involved in private efforts to promote ground source heat pumps through design assistance, soil and rock formation thermal conductivity testing, and technical support for thermally-enhanced grouting materials.

Student Activities:
Welcome back students. We plan on kicking off the first evening meeting with our fall Student Night. We are encouraging the students this year to attend this meeting by having a $150 Past President’s Scholarship drawing the night of the meeting.
We are also planning on trying a Student Sponsor Program similar to other Chapters. The Chapters that have tried this have had success with growing their student participation. We will be inviting ASHRAE member companies to sponsor students from one of the ASHRAE Student Chapters. Sponsors will be responsible for covering individual meal costs for any of the meetings the students attends. The Student Activities committee will be asking the students to complete a questionnaire to pair up individuals with businesses with like interests. The goal is to help mentor the students and perhaps discover future employment opportunities.
Again this year, our ASHRAE chapter is sponsoring the Engineering Exploring group. The purpose of Engineering Exploring is to provide our youth the opportunity to look into the world of engineering as a career choice. Activities in the past have involved visiting businesses related to different aspects of engineering. These businesses have included Sencore, Broin, Lodgenet, Hutchinson Technology, Raven, EROS and the City of Sioux Falls. If your company, or if you know of a company, that would like to participate in this program please give me a call.
ASHRAE Technical Seminar – Scholarship Fund Raiser
Kasey Abbott
Dr. Charles Remund from SDSU will be conducting a technical seminar from 2 – 5 PM next Wednesday October 3 at the Westward Ho. Registration will be from 1:45 – 2 PM. Dr. Remund is one of the leading experts on ground source heat pumps.
Topics that Dr. Remund will cover in his seminar will include:
Dr. Remund is donating his time since this is a fund raiser for SD ASHRAE Scholarships. Individuals that attend the seminar can choose which scholarship fund to donate to (ASHRAE SDSU Endowment or the ASHRAE SETI/MTI Endowment).
Please make checks out to either:
Cost for the seminar is $120 for non-members and $90 for ASHRAE members. Students may attend for free. For ASHRAE members who are not seeking credit for PDH hours we will accept a lower contribution of $50. However, I would encourage everyone to consider these minimum amounts and to give more if you can. Your contribution will help insure the future of our industry. This contribution is also tax deductible and you will receive recognition from the foundation and the SD Chapter of ASHRAE.
